In Northwest Wisconsin, the manufacturing sector is one of the region’s highest growth industries. Statewide over 16-percent of the state’s workforce is employed in manufacturing; higher than the national average of nine-percent, according to the Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce. In the past few decades manufacturing jobs have transformed from dirty, low-paying jobs to advanced, skill-driven, high-paying careers in state of the art facilities. Jobs in manufacturing range from basic line-workers to advanced positions as CNC machinists and mechanical engineers; it’s an industry where everyone is a fit.
In honor of manufacturing month, Northwest Wisconsin Concentrated Employment Program, Inc. (CEP, Inc.) and the Northwest Wisconsin Workforce Investment Board are collaborating with industry and educational partners to highlight the manufacturing industry. Mythbusting Manufacturing Tours is a fun, interactive event-taking place in October to help dispel myths about manufacturing and expose youth and adults to manufacturing career opportunities in Northwest Wisconsin.
This year’s Mythbusting Manufacturing Tour event is taking place in Price County on October 22, 2014. During this daylong event, students will tour Phillips area manufacturers and participate in hands-on demonstrations of manufacturing programs – including welding, electromechanical technology, and machine tool – at the Phillips Northcentral Technical College Campus. Schools able to participate in this session of Mythbusting Manufacturing are Butternut, Chequamegon, Phillips, Prentice, and Rib Lake. This event is open to high school students (nineth-12th grade), teachers, administrators, and chaperons.
Mythbusting Manufacturing Tours is in partnership with CEP, Inc., Gold Collar Careers, Manufacturing Works, Northcentral Technical College, Northwest Wisconsin Workforce Investment Board, and Skills Wisconsin. Funding for this session of Mythbusting Manufacturing is through a Skills Wisconsin Industry Partnership grant received by the Northwest Wisconsin Workforce Investment Board.
