More than 30 girls from local schools went to Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College in Superior for the Diva Tech event.
They got hands on experience with welding, automotive repair and other fields to pique their interest and expose them to careers where women are underrepresented.
“There are a lot of these occupations that women do just as well if not better than men do,” CEP Incorporated Youth Services Specialist Suzannah Crandall said. “They just haven’t thought that it was a possibility for them.”
“I never thought of welding before I went to Diva Tech,” WITC welding student Hallie Kmetz said. “A lot of high school girls they’re either cosmetology, nursing, occupational therapy. I feel it’s a great need for women to get out and do nontraditional occupations, get their hands dirty.”
The girls also toured local manufacturing facilities.
